At Holy Spirit, we are committed to supporting all children in developing strong literacy skills and becoming confident communicators.

Guided by the MACS Vision for Learning and Vision for Engagement, our literacy program is designed to engage every student and includes:

  • Strong foundations in the early years through the Phonics Plus program, a systematic and explicit phonics approach in the Junior School
  • A daily two-hour literacy block dedicated to reading, writing, speaking and listening
  • Ongoing assessment, including DIBELS and PAT Reading, to monitor progress and inform responsive teaching
  • Intervention and extension groups to ensure students receive the support or challenge they need
  • Rich literature experiences that develop comprehension, vocabulary, creativity and critical thinking
  • Classrooms where students are encouraged to share ideas with confidence and clarity

Mathematics

Mathematics teaching and learning at Holy Spirit is guided by the Victorian Curriculum and Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools’ Vision for Instruction, in which new ideas and concepts are introduced using explicit instruction and guided practice.

We focus on developing Mathematical skills and knowledge important for everyday life, and for future learning, through attention to the Mathematics proficiencies of Understanding, Fluency, Reasoning and Problem Solving.  Maths at Holy Spirit prioritises and develops students’:

maths curriculum
  • Number sense: an understanding of quantities and numbers and their representation
  • Fluency: students’ ability to work accurately with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Conceptual understanding of Maths – the why, not just the how.
  • Understanding of how concrete materials and representations can deepen their understanding of Maths concepts
  • Ability to apply their Maths knowledge in a variety of contexts by explicitly teaching problem-solving and reasoning strategies

We offer specific specialised programs to support the needs of students in Mathematics, including:

Getting Ready in Numeracy (GRIN) is an evidence based  intervention program which supports students at risk of falling behind in Mathematics.  The GRIN program supports about 20 students each year, who are experiencing difficulty in Mathematics.  It recognises the difficulty for students when they have fallen behind their peers.  The program’s approach is derived from cognitive load theory, and prepares children with vocabulary and information they will need to successfully access their daily Mathematics lessons.

Individual and small group support for students with developing number fluency through focussed, intensive  ‘number dives’.

There are extension opportunities for children who are working at a higher level in Maths, including:

  • Extension tasks and groups within regular Maths lesson times
  • Participation in the Australian Maths Trust’s Maths Challenge in Years 4-6.  (This is a national, problem solving challenge, run over a period of weeks.)

Learning Diversity

Holy Spirit Primary School celebrates the rich diversity of experiences and strengths each learner brings.

Age, culture, faith, background, and ability all shape how children learn.

We are committed to providing an inclusive education that responds to individual needs, ensuring every student feels valued, engaged, and supported to flourish, while experiencing God’s love and care, and developing a positive sense of achievement through growth and success.

meeting them where they are and encouraging them to grow with confidence.

Through collaboration with classroom teachers, specialist staff, and Learning Support Officers, support is provided in a variety of ways, including in-class assistance, small group sessions, and individual learning.

We work in close partnership with families and support agencies, nurturing strong relationships with our students so we can truly understand their strengths, needs, interests, and aspirations. Religious Education

Holy Spirit Catholic Primary School is a faith-centred learning community inspired by the teachings of Jesus.

We foster belonging, inclusion and respect by honouring the voice and dignity of every member. In dialogue with Catholic beliefs and practices, we celebrate diversity within Melbourne’s multi-faith and multicultural context.

The liturgical seasons and sacraments, particularly the Eucharist, shape the rhythm of our year, deepening our encounter with God and strengthening the connection between faith and life.

Our Religious Education program supports each child to flourish fully, spiritually, emotionally, socially and intellectually.

Through Catholic Social Teaching, students learn how to build a fair and compassionate world that honours the dignity of every person, especially those most in need.

Inspired by the teachings of Jesus, they are encouraged to care for others, stand up for justice, protect our environment and contribute to the common good. Learning unfolds through a clear progression across three strands and five key content areas.

  • Knowledge and Understanding

             -Seeking truth   (head)

  • Reasoning and Responding

             -Making meaning  (heart)

  • Personal and Communal Engagement

             -living story     (hands)

Sacramental program

Children are prepared for and celebrate the Sacraments as part of our Middle and Senior curriculum.

The Sacraments are celebrated in conjunction with students from our other Parish Primary Schools, St Anthony’s, St Joseph’s and St Mary’s.

Our celebrations include:

Reconciliation   (Year 3)

First Eucharist  (Year 4)

Confirmation    (Year 6)

Wellbeing

Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) is committed to providing safe, inclusive and respectful learning environments for all children and young people.

The Vision for Instruction and Vision for Engagement set out how we will deliver this promise to our students, families and staff, and achieve the vision of our MACS 2030 strategy: that every student is inspired and enabled to flourish and enrich the world.

At Holy Spirit Primary School we strive to ensure that students are equipped with the skills, strategies and opportunities to grow into a socially, emotionally and spiritually well person. Our school has a range of programs and curriculum based learning across all year levels to ensure that our school community is a well community.

In our positive school community every face has a place, every voice is important and everyone has something to contribute. Our school community offers opportunities for our students, staff and families to feel included and belong to such a caring and dynamic place.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a framework that helps schools to plan and implement practices across the whole school in order to improve educational and behavioral outcomes for all children, staff and families.

The PBL framework is founded on a positive approach to whole school well being, with targetted approaches for children with higher levels of need.

Our school community will explore values that are explicit to our school and we will all work towards instilling these into our community.

Introducing modelling and reinforcing positive social behavior is an important component of a child’s educational experience.

PBL works on the assumption that we cannot assume that children know how to behave. Children must be explicitly taught the behaviours we want them to demonstrate.

MACS Governance Statement

Holy Spirit is a school which operates with the consent of the Melbourne Archdiocese  of Melbourne and is operated and governed  by Melbourne Archdiocese Schools Ltd (MACS)

MACS governs and operates 292 Catholic schools in the Archdiocese to continue the mission of Catholic education to proclaim the Good News and equip our young people with the knowledge, skills and hope to live meaningful lives and enrich the world around them.

Because the good work of educating the young is a co-responsible task led by every member of the Catholic school community, School Advisory Councils have been established to provide a crucial point of connection between the wider school community and school leaders.

This governance model was designed to ease the administrative burden on our schools and parishes, allow parish priests to focus on the mission of education in the parish, enable greater collaboration between schools and ensure greater consistency in school policies and procedures.
